HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF DURING THIS STRESSFUL TIME

This can be stressful and overwhelming specially with all the uncertainty that comes with it. This makes self-care that much more important. Practising self-care is different for each person and can

even be different from day to day. Key is to implement some easy, regular self-care habits to take care of yourself. We hope these simple ideas help you get started with some self-care during these stressful times.


Self-Care Tip #1 : Get together (virtually)

If it wasn’t clear before, we now know that we are made to be social creatures. We live for connection and the current situation can definitely create a massive dent on that connection. But we don’t have to go through this alone; cooped inside our houses. Make use of the many wonderful applications like Zoom or House Party or even Skype or FaceTime and organise catch ups with close friends or family. Organise a tea party or coffee catch up; an afternoon drink or a dinner party.  I’m finding it’s a great way to stay in touch with friends and far away relatives and all of a sudden, we are ‘seeing’ each other and staying in touch more often than before.


Self-Care Tip #2: Find some time to relax by yourself

Find some time alone with yourself. Have a warm bath. Light a candle and play your favourite song or if you don’t have a bath tub at home, have a long warm shower. Afterwards make some time to mindfully moisturise your body. Slow down as much as you can. Give your body a few minutes of mindful attention and check in with each part of your body. There’s no better time than now to slow down and appreciate your body. And you’ll be surprised how soothing this can be.


Self-Care Tip #3 : Practise mindfulness

Constantly checking the news and social media while being cooped up indoors can amplify those feelings of restlessness. Begin or end your day with a few minutes of deep breathing. Take some time to clear your mind and centre yourself. Start small, commit to 5 minutes daily. For some people, complete silence would be helpful while others may find some soothing music helpful. If you are after some soft sounds, check out the Mindfulness & Meditation playlist on Spotify. A favourite of mine from there is ‘Beautiful Stillness’ by Billy-Joe. If you prefer a guided mediation, there are some wonderful apps like Calm or Headspace.
